The Resurgence of the Daybed for Small Apartments

in Bedding

Futons were the rage for a while.  Almost every college student had one in his apartment.  Many young professionals just starting out in the world could not afford a bedroom suite and a living room suite so they opted for the futon.  The truth is that the futon wasn’t appealing as a piece of living room furniture and it was not comfortable enough for a good night of sleep.

Daybeds have replaced the futon for small apartment comfort.Today the futon has been replaced by the daybed.  A few decades ago they were all the rage.  However, when the futon became popular and cheaper the daybed lost its popularity.  Because of the better design of the daybed and the more attractive daybed bedding, comforters, pillow shams and accessories the daybed is finding its way back into many small apartments and homes.

The comfort difference between the futon and the daybed is remarkable.  The futon has a pad that is usually no more than 3 or 4 inches thick because the futon “mattress” has to be able to fold to make the seat and the back with in the upright position.    On the other hand, the daybed has a twin bed mattress, just like the ones we all have or see in the mattress stores.  Who would not prefer sleeping on a mattress as compared to a pad?

Better fitting bedding and design has made the daybed a part of many homes today. The bedding for daybeds not longer looks like a throw tossed over a mattress.  Most daybed bedding ensembles have four, five or six pieces including a comforter that doubles as a seat cover, and two or three pillow shams, and occasionally a bedskirt.  Today with the bedding upgraded to better fabrics in more attractive patterns and designs it is difficult not to find a daybed and bedding that will find a place in your family room, home office, sitting room or spare bedroom.
